Clifford Tarlington, better known as ZoxOx, escaped the Cleveland foster system and migrated south at age nine. In his YouTube autobiography, ZoxCars, the GenX outlaw artist describes his last foster home as a pirate ship:

“The parents, they never hit me, no no, they let the older kids be enforcers. It was like a pirate ship. I was a fat little kid who needed glasses, what was I supposed to do? They’d call me Squints, or Ox, or Shuffles. No one called me by name. I get it, who’s named Clifford? That stung worse than the beatings and the constant grind. Not having a name. So I bounced and made my own.

Thank God for libraries. I pretty much library hopped from Cleveland to Mobile. You can learn anything from books. You can escape anything, too. Except how you smell, showering was the hardest thing to figure out.”
