“You’re deep underwater, if you hear me, you won’t understand, understand, my goodbyes…”

Public access famous, this Columbus, Ohio based chain-smoking band toured coast to coast in the 1980s, living off merch sales, day labor, and charity. Their trademark was playing instruments they crafted by hand, often made of unusual materials found at thrift shops and DIY stores. Their sound was best described as hardware blues.

Their breakout single, “Under Water” was banned in Bulgaria for three weeks in 1986, landing it on the radar screen of U.S. media outlets. Due to a mistranslation, the government banned the single for what it thought were pro-suicidal themes. The song is actually about losing a pet to old age.
